Monument to V. I. Patsayev, Hero of the Soviet Union and Pilot-Cosmonaut
Historical Background: Viktor Ivanovich Patsayev was born in Aktobe and became a figure whose name entered the history of world cosmonautics. He was born on 19 June 1933 in Aktobe. The life and heroic achievement of this pilot-cosmonaut, who was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, occupy an important place not only in the history of the Aktobe region, but also in the space history of Kazakhstan.
On 6 June 1971, Viktor Patsayev flew into space aboard the Soyuz-11 spacecraft together with Georgy Dobrovolsky and Vladislav Volkov. The crew worked aboard Salyut-1, one of the world’s first orbital space stations, where they conducted scientific experiments. This mission became one of the key stages in the history of human space exploration.
Viktor Patsayev’s professional life is remembered as a powerful example of dedication to science, courage and humanity’s desire to expand the boundaries of knowledge.
Description of the Monument: The monument is a monumental composition placed on a trapezoid-shaped stepped stylobate. At its centre stands a five-edged red granite stele, 4 metres high. Its upward-oriented form symbolises the human aspiration toward the sky, science and outer space.
The two-metre sculpture mounted on the stele artistically presents Viktor Patsayev as a person striving toward a noble goal, heroic achievement and scientific discovery. On the front side of the pedestal there is an inscription: “Viktor Ivanovich Patsayev, pilot-cosmonaut, Hero of the Soviet Union.” This inscription emphasises the memorial meaning of the monument and its dedication to the cosmonaut’s achievement.

Opening of the Monument: The monument to Viktor Ivanovich Patsayev was solemnly unveiled on 4 June 1976 on Abulkhair Khan Avenue in Aktobe. The date was chosen shortly before the cosmonaut’s birthday and became a sign of respect for his life, scientific work and heroic service as a pilot-cosmonaut.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by well-known Soviet cosmonauts, Heroes of the Soviet Union Nikolai Rukavishnikov, Georgy Grechko, Alexei Gubarev and Valentin Lebedev. Viktor Patsayev’s wife, Vera Patsayeva, also spoke at the ceremony. This event became an important historical moment not only for the people of Aktobe, but also for the Soviet space community of that time.
The planting of trees near the monument by cosmonauts who arrived from Moscow also carried special symbolic meaning. This tradition shows that the monument is made not only of stone and sculpture, but also of living historical memory.
Why Is This Monument Important?
The monument is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Republic of Kazakhstan of national significance. In the cultural space of Aktobe, it brings together the ideas of patriotic education, historical memory and respect for science.
