Historical background: Abdijamil Nurpeisov was a People’s Writer of Kazakhstan, an outstanding representative of Kazakh literature and a public figure. His trilogy “Blood and Sweat”, consisting of the novels “Twilight”, “Ordeal” and “Collapse”, explores the social fate of the people, human character and the contradictions of the early twentieth century. The work artistically reflects the historical and social realities of the Aral region, Shalkar and the Aktobe area.

Description of the monument: The monument was installed in 2008. The sculptural composition represents the artistic world of the characters from Abdijamil Nurpeisov’s trilogy “Blood and Sweat”. The bronze group is placed on a rock-shaped pedestal finished with pinkish stone. The pedestal is 5.65 metres long, 3 metres wide and 1.62 metres high. The composition stands on a two-level cross-shaped foundation measuring 12 by 12.6 metres and clad in pink granite. On the symbolic Bel-Aran rock are depicted Elaman and Kalen striving for freedom and a better life, the beautiful Akbala, the elder Suyu, Sudyrakhmet, Karakatyn and Tanirbergen with his dog.

Historical and cultural significance: The monument to the characters of “Blood and Sweat” is an important cultural site that artistically recreates the social upheavals and historical transformations of Kazakh society in the early twentieth century. Through the figures of the characters, the composition reveals the contradictions of the era, human destinies, social division and changes in public consciousness. The symbolic image of Bel-Aran is perceived as a sign of historical space and spiritual search. This monument is one of the rare examples of literary heritage embodied in urban space.
