Historical Background

The “Azattyqtyñ Aq Tañy” Historical Complex is a work of monumental art that symbolically represents the centuries-long aspiration of the Kazakh people for freedom and independence. The idea of freedom in Kazakh history is not limited to a single period. It is connected with the defence of the land, the strengthening of statehood and the preservation of the people’s spiritual independence.

The Kazakh-Dzungar wars of the 17th and 18th centuries revealed the special role of batyrs in steppe society. In that period, batyrs were not only military leaders, but also defenders of national unity and territorial integrity.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the idea of freedom acquired a new historical meaning. The Kazakh intelligentsia worked to educate the people, awaken national consciousness and promote the ideas of legal and political self-determination. The leaders of the Alash movement made a major contribution to the spiritual, legal and political foundations of Kazakh statehood.

In this sense, the “Azattyqtyñ Aq Tañy” complex brings together the historical continuity of Kazakhstan’s path to independence — from the heroic traditions of the steppe to the educational, public and political movement of the national intelligentsia.

Description of the Monument

The complex consists of a foundation, a wall reminiscent of the shape of a traditional yurt, and a bas-relief composition depicting Kazakh khans, batyrs and Alash figures.

The central artistic element of the complex is the bas-relief. It presents historical figures associated with the struggle for freedom, statehood and the spiritual development of the Kazakh people. The composition includes bas-relief portraits of Alikhan Bukeikhan, Akhmet Baitursynuly, Mustafa Shokay, Khalel Dosmukhamedov, Mirzhakyp Dulatov, Zhakhansha Dosmukhamedov, Magzhan Zhumabayev, Telzhan Shonanov, Temirbek Zhurgenov, Uzakbay Kulymbetov and Mukhamedzhan Tynyshbayev.

The relief composition is 5 metres high and 7 metres long. This large-scale artistic solution gives the complex a solemn appearance and makes it a prominent historical and cultural landmark in the urban landscape.

The wall, which evokes the image of a yurt, is associated with the ideas of the shanyrak, unity, statehood and shared historical memory. The gallery of historical figures shows that the idea of freedom continued through different historical periods and took different forms while preserving its inner continuity.

Opening of the Monument

The “Azattyqtyñ Aq Tañy” Historical Complex was solemnly opened on 25 December 2021 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The complex was installed with the support of the Akimat of Aktobe Region.

The opening ceremony was attended by regional officials, public figures, members of the intelligentsia, as well as descendants of Temirbek Zhurgenov and Uzakbay Kulymbetov. During the ceremony, the “Alash Urany” anthem was performed and the flag of the Alash Party was raised.

The opening of the complex became an important event in the cultural life of Aktobe. It was dedicated to honouring the memory of historical figures who fought for independence, promoting their legacy among younger generations and renewing national historical consciousness.
