Edige Bi, also remembered in oral tradition as Er Edige and Edige Batyr, is one of the significant historical figures of the Golden Horde period. He lived in the second half of the 14th and the early 15th centuries and played an important role in the political life of the Golden Horde.

In historical tradition, Edige is described as a far-sighted statesman who influenced the strengthening of the Golden Horde’s political structure after the major upheavals of the late 14th century. He is known not only as a military leader, but also as a biy, a political figure and a person closely connected with the complex processes of medieval steppe history.

Edige’s name is widely known not only among the Kazakh people, but also among many Turkic peoples. His image has been preserved in the historical-heroic epic “Edige Batyr”. Description of the Monument

The monument to Edige Bi is a bronze monumental sculpture. Edige is depicted wearing a spacious robe associated with the traditional image of Kazakh biys, a helmet, and with his left hand raised. This gesture presents him as a figure addressing the people, calling for unity and carrying historical responsibility.

The sculpture is 4.5 metres high, while the pedestal is 4 metres high. The pedestal is faced with red granite. The combination of bronze and red granite gives the monument a solemn, strong and expressive appearance.

The artistic composition brings together several aspects of Edige’s image: the warrior, the biy and the wise statesman. The robe and helmet recall his historical era, while the raised hand symbolises public responsibility, leadership and the idea of statehood.

Opening of the Monument

The monument to Edige Bi was installed in Aktobe in 2020 to mark the 750th anniversary of the Golden Horde. Its opening was intended to honour a major historical figure, draw attention to the medieval history of the steppe and introduce younger generations to the traditions of unity, courage and service to the people.

The opening ceremony was attended by regional officials, members of the intelligentsia, historians, public figures and residents of the city. During the ceremony, speakers emphasised the importance of Edige’s name for national historical consciousness.

The unveiling of the monument became an important cultural event in Aktobe. Its location on Edige Batyr Avenue is symbolic: the name of the historical figure is preserved in the city both through the name of the avenue and through the monument itself.
