Gravesite of Nurpeis Baiganin

Historical Background: Nurpeis Baiganin was an outstanding Kazakh folk poet, zhyrau and Honoured Art Worker of Kazakhstan. He was born on 20 June 1860 in the territory of present-day Temir District of Aktobe Region and passed away on 9 April 1945.

Baiganin was one of the major representatives of the Kazakh zhyrau tradition who carried the epic heritage of the people into the twentieth century. He performed at the Temir, Oyil, Irgiz and Oral fairs, reciting such epic works as “Koblandy Batyr”, “Alpamys Batyr”, “Er Targyn”, “Kyz Zhibek”, “Aiman — Sholpan” and others. According to available sources, the poet knew 40–50 zhyrs by heart.

His creativity was not limited to oral performance. In later years, many of Baiganin’s works were written down and preserved as part of Kazakhstan’s literary heritage. For this reason, his name occupies a special place in the history of Kazakh epic poetry, zhyrau art and folk literature.

Description of the Monument: The gravesite of Nurpeis Baiganin is located at the city cemetery of Aktobe. A four-sided rectangular stone marker with adjoining slabs is placed over the grave. The marker measures 2.5 m by 0.80 m.

The edges of the stone marker are decorated with Kazakh national ornament. On the front side there is the inscription “Akyn Nurpeis Baiganin 1860–1945” and an image of a dombra. The dombra serves as a symbolic reference to Baiganin’s identity as a zhyrau, poet and performer.

The grave is enclosed by a metal fence measuring 3 m by 3 m. The modest and restrained composition gives the site a clear memorial character and recalls Nurpeis Baiganin’s place in Kazakh folk culture.

Nurpeis Baiganin was not only a performer, but also a preserver of Kazakh epic heritage. One of the extensive versions of the epic “Koblandy Batyr” performed by him was recorded in 1940.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Baiganin became widely known across the republic, and his works began to be systematically written down. He preserved traditional zhyrs and also created poems dedicated to the events of his own time.
