Relief Memorial Sign Dedicated to R. I. Kutuyev, Hero of the Soviet Union
Historical Background: Rauf Ibragimovich Kutuyev was a participant in the Great Patriotic War and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born on 6 May 1925 in the city of Samara. In 1930, he moved with his parents to Aktobe, where he spent his childhood and youth.
After completing seven years of school, he began training as a fitter at Defence Plant No. 692 in early 1942. In January 1943, Rauf Kutuyev was drafted into the Red Army, and from August of the same year he fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War.
In 1944, he completed junior lieutenant courses and became a platoon commander in the 1st Rifle Regiment of the 99th Rifle Division on the 2nd Ukrainian Front. On 5 December 1944, near the town of Ercsi in Hungary, his platoon distinguished itself during the crossing of the Danube. The unit crossed the river, captured an important bridgehead on the right bank and held it under enemy fire. Rauf Kutuyev was wounded but continued to command the battle and was killed while repelling an enemy counterattack.
On 24 March 1945, Rauf Ibragimovich Kutuyev was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and heroism during the crossing of the Danube and the defence of the bridgehead.
Description of the Monument: The relief memorial sign dedicated to Rauf Kutuyev is a complex architectural and memorial composition. It consists of a stylobate made of red and grey granite blocks, a rectangular pyramidal obelisk element and memorial plaques.
Granite plaques are placed on the outer side of the monument. They bear the name of R. I. Kutuyev, information that the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to him posthumously, and the names of factory workers who died during the Great Patriotic War.
For this reason, the monument is dedicated not only to one hero, but also to the memory of the workers who went to the front and never returned. The strict geometric forms, the use of granite and the memorial inscriptions emphasise the tragedy of wartime, the resilience of the frontline generation and the strength of historical memory.
Opening of the Monument
The monument was installed in 1974 at the initiative and with the funds collected by the workers of the factory where Rauf Kutuyev had worked before the war. Its installation became an expression of the factory workers’ grateful memory of the hero and of all their colleagues who died at the front.
The exact date of the opening ceremony is not specified in the available public sources. However, the installation of the monument in 1974 became an important stage in the formation of Aktobe’s military memorial landscape.
Why Is This Monument Important?
This monument brings together the military and labour history of Aktobe. Rauf Kutuyev’s life reflects the path of an entire generation: from a young worker on the home front to a platoon commander who showed heroism in battle.
The monument reminds residents and visitors of the contribution made by Aktobe’s industrial enterprises and their workers to the common Victory. It preserves the memory not only of the personal feat of one hero, but also of the collective responsibility, endurance and self-sacrifice of people during wartime.
As a historical and cultural monument of local significance, this site plays an important role in preserving historical memory, educating young people in the spirit of patriotism and honouring the generation of Victory.
What Can You Notice When Looking at the Monument?
First, notice the strict and compact composition of the monument. The combination of red and grey granite gives it a solemn and restrained appearance.
The memorial plaques are especially important. They preserve not only the name of Rauf Kutuyev, but also the names of factory workers who died during the war. This makes the monument a place of collective remembrance.
