The “Tuyetobe” Obelisk-Monument Dedicated to the Victims of Political Repressions of the 1930s–1950s
Historical Background
“Tuyetobe” is one of the sacred memorial places near Aktobe dedicated to the victims of political repressions. During the 1930s–1950s, the totalitarian system persecuted thousands of people: many were executed, sent to camps, separated from their families and deprived of their dignity and good name.
According to historical data cited in local materials, more than 8,000 people in the Aktobe Region were subjected to political repression in the 1930s, and more than 2,000 of them were sentenced to death. In 1987, during research work near burial sites along the Zhaman Kargaly River, human remains were discovered; some skulls reportedly bore traces of gunshots to the back of the head. These findings confirmed the tragic significance of Tuyetobe as one of the regional places of remembrance connected with victims of political terror.
Today, Tuyetobe is not only a historical site, but also a spiritual space of remembrance where people honour the memory of innocent victims.
Description of the Monument
The monument consists of a stylobate, a pedestal and a memorial stone. The main monument is made of natural stone. Its surface bears commemorative inscriptions in Kazakh and Russian dedicated to the victims of political repressions.
The main inscriptions on the stone read:
“Жазықсыз жазаланғандар рухына тағзым”
“Жертвам репрессии 30–50-х годов от благодарных потомков. Смерть Ваша безвинна, память о Вас вечна”
The artistic design of the monument is simple, strict and deeply expressive. The natural stone symbolises the weight of time, the wound preserved in collective memory and the silent fate of innocent people whose lives were cut short. The monument has no excessive decoration: its power lies in its quiet and truthful reminder of tragedy.
Opening of the Monument
The “Tuyetobe” obelisk-monument was installed in 1990 to perpetuate the memory of the victims of political repressions. Since then, it has become one of the important memorial places in the Aktobe Region.
Every year on 31 May, the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions and Famine, commemorative events are held at Tuyetobe. Descendants of the repressed, city residents, representatives of the intelligentsia, young people and local authorities gather here to pay tribute to those who were executed and persecuted unjustly.
