Historical background

Tolegen Aibergenov was one of the outstanding representatives of twentieth-century Kazakh poetry. He was born on 8 March 1937 in the Kungrad district of Karakalpakstan. In 1959, he graduated from the Tashkent Pedagogical Institute and began his career in education. Later, he worked at the literature promotion bureau under the Union of Writers of Kazakhstan.

His poems began to appear in the republican press in 1957. The central themes of his poetry include longing for the native land, purity of the human soul, love, the meaning of life and spiritual freedom. His poetry collections “Arman sapary” 1963, “Omirge sayakhat” 1965, “Qumdagy munaralar” 1968, “Men sagan gashyq edim” 1970, “Amanat” 1975 and “Bir toiym bar” 1981 secured his distinctive place in the history of Kazakh literature.

Tolegen Aibergenov passed away on 29 August 1967 in Nukus. Although his life was short, he remained in public memory as a poet who brought a new rhythm, emotional power and deep culture of feeling to Kazakh lyric poetry.

Opening of the monument

The monument-sculpture to Tolegen Aibergenov was solemnly opened on 15 October 2021 in Lovers’ Alley in Aktobe. It was installed with the support of the Akimat of Aktobe Region as part of the Republican Forum “Adebiet. Rukh. Qogam”.

The opening ceremony was attended by regional officials, representatives of the Union of Writers of Kazakhstan, poets, writers, cultural figures, the poet’s daughter Makhabbat Aibergenova and residents of the city. The event became an important cultural tribute to the legacy of a poet who left a significant mark on Kazakh literature.

Description of the monument

The monument consists of a foundation, a pedestal and a sculptural image of the poet. It is installed on a square stone-paved platform measuring 4.15 by 4.15 metres.

The foundation is rectangular. Its dimensions are 1.2 by 1.60 metres, and its height is 17 centimetres. The pedestal is made of solid granite. In the lower part of the pedestal there is an image of a feather pen, symbolising poetic inspiration and literary creativity. On the front side, a line from the poet’s famous poem is inscribed: “Bır toiym bolatyny sözsız menıñ”. On the left side of the pedestal, the name “Tölegen Aibergenov” is written.

The pedestal measures 1.10 by 0.75 metres and is 2.22 metres high. The sculptural image of the poet is made of marble. According to open sources, the total height of the monument is 3.2 metres.
